Sustained-Release Arginine & Blood Pressure

Many years ago, scientists in basic research noticed that some unknown substance was formed in the lining of the arteries, causing relaxation and greater elasticity. Because the reaction time between creation and depletion of that substance, it was a long time before researchers determined it to be nitric oxide, formed in the presence of adequate and abundant amounts of the amino acid arginine.

Greater production of nitric oxide within those arterial linings, the endothelium, lowers blood pressure. Logically, then, research led to experiments with increasing arginine. But when an oral dose was given to subjects, there was, at best, only the briefest beneficial effect. Conversely, when given on a continuous intravenous basis in hospitals, the wonders of arginine were seen in more flexible arteries capable of increased blood flow as needed and lowered blood pressure. But the approach was, of course, impractical.

Another number of years passed, and sustained-release (SR) arginine formulations were developed, allowing the level of arginine in the blood to remain elevated over a long period of time. Those SR-arginine tablets or capsules have been shown to lower blood pressure very nicely, especially in conjunction with the use of a powerful antioxidant such as Lyc-O-Mato tomato extract and/or MegaNatural-BP grape seed extract. Readers of my publication The Diet Heart Newsletter who participated in an informal test trial I conducted reported blood pressure lowering of about 10 to 12 point systolic (top number) and 5 to 6 diastolic (lower number) BP. Some experienced even greater improvements, up to 24/11 point drops.

The best (and also least expensive) SR arginine formulation currently on the market is made by the Endurance Products Company in Tigard, Oregon. Learn more about their product and order a supply online at www.endur.com.
